In this guide we will cover:

  • What is Gantt View?
  • Switching to Gantt View
  • Gantt View Options
  • Drag and Drop Tasks (v2.253+)
  • Configure and View Dependencies from Gantt View

What is Gantt View?

Gantt view within a project shows a project's tasks on a timeline, giving you a visual overview of when each task starts and ends across the life of the project. Each task can be selected from the view to open up the dedicated task ticket. From v2.253 and v2.256, Gantt view in Halo includes additional features that let you manage a project's tasks and milestones directly from this view and show additional information about each task.

Gantt view uses the "Start Date" and "Target Date" fields to determine the start and end of a task, therefore in order to use this view, you will need to ensure the "Start Date" and "Target Date" fields are present on your project task on ticket types.

Switching to Gantt View

To use Gantt view to view the child tasks/tickets of a parent ticket (e.g. when viewing projects) use the "Gantt View" button in the tasks/child tickets tab.

Gantt View Options

Once in Gantt view some additional options are available to control how you would like the tasks organised.

Fig 2. Gantt View Options

Task Gantt

This view shows each of the tasks assigned to the project, ordered based on the start date of the tasks.

Fig 3. Task Gantt view

Note: The colours of the tiles indicate the status the task is in. The colour shown can be customised by changing the colours used for each of your statuses.

Agent Gantt

This view shows each of the tasks organised by the agent they are assigned to.

Fig 4. Agent Gantt View

Task Milestone Gantt

This view shows each of the tasks organised by the milestone they belong to.

Fig 5. Task Milestone Gantt view

Milestone Only Gantt

This view shows the start and target dates for the milestones of the project.

Fig 6. Milestone Only Gantt

If a milestone is dependent on another, this view will indicate it is locked until the dependencies are complete.

Drag and Drop Tasks (v2.253+)

From v2.253+ you can drag and drop tasks whilst in Gantt view to adjust their start and target dates. (On versions prior to this the start and target dates must be set against the tasks themselves).

Fig 7. Drag and Drop Tasks

If any dependencies are configured for the tasks/milestones, dragging a tasks will also move a dependent tasks to keep their start and target dates equal.

Configure and View Dependencies from Gantt View

From v2.253+ milestone dependencies can be configured and viewed in Gantt, creating an easy way to organise milestone dependencies. From v2.256+ task date dependencies can be configured in Gantt view.

View Dependencies (v2.253+)

To see the dependencies of your tasks/milestones adjust the Gantt view to control which dependencies you would like to see.

Fig 8. Show dependencies on Gantt view

When viewing milestone dependencies, arrows will link tasks based on the milestones they belong to.

Configure Milestone Dependencies (v2.253+)

Dependencies of milestones can be configured in Gantt view by dragging and dropping arrows between tasks/milestones.

Milestone dependencies can be set when in the "Milestone Only" Gantt view. To make one milestone dependent on another drag an arrow from one milestone point to another milestone point.

Fig 9. Create Milestone dependency

Hovering over a dependency arrow will indicate which milestone dependency it is representing.

Configure Date Dependencies (v2.256+)

From v2.256+ date dependencies can be configured from Gantt view by dragging and dropping arrows between tasks, then choosing how those tasks start/target dates are dependent on each other.

Date dependencies can be set when in the "Task Milestone Gantt" or "Task Gantt" view. To make one task dependent on another drag an arrow from one task point to another task point.

Fig 10. Create task dependency

Then you will be prompted to choose which type of dependency these tasks have.

Fig 11. Select dependency Type

Interdependent - The start of the 'Dependent Ticket' should only occur after the start date of the 'Ticket' has passed. The target date of the 'Dependent Ticket' should also only occur after the target date of the 'Ticket' has passed.

Start date updates dependent Tickets start and target date - The 'Dependent Ticket's' start date and target date will change when the start date of the 'Ticket' changes.

Target date updates dependent Tickets start and target date - The 'Dependent Ticket's' start date and target date will change when the target date of the 'Ticket' changes.

Finish to Start - The 'Dependent Tickets' start date should not occur until the target date of the 'Ticket' has passed.

Start to Start - The 'Dependent Tickets' start date should not occur until the start date of the 'Ticket' has passed.

Finish to Finish - The 'Dependent Tickets' target target date should not occur until the target date of the 'Ticket' has passed.

Start to Finish - The 'Dependent Tickets' target target date should not occur until the start date of the 'Ticket' has passed.

If an invalid date dependency is configured arrows will turn red to indicate this. For example, if I configure a "Start to Finish" dependency in which the start of one task is dependent on the end of another, this will be invalid if the start date of the dependent task is before the end of the other task.

Fig 12. Invalid Date Dependency

If tasks are dragged to change their dates, dependent tasks will also move automatically to keep the dependency valid (keep the date distances the same). If task start/ends are dragged dependent tasks will not be updated, therefore arrow colour is used to indicate if this change makes a dependency no longer valid.

Dependencies can be deleted from the Gantt view by double clicking the arrow and confirming deletion.

Apply Column Profile to Gantt Chart (v2.253+)

From v2.253+ column profiles can be applied to Gantt charts to show additional information about each task. To toggle a column profile on/off use the "Use column profile" checkbox.

Fig 13. Enable column profile for Gantt chart

The columns applied will be based on the column profile applied at table view, but this can be toggled using the option shown in Figure 14.

Fig 14. Edit Column Profile used on Gantt

Keep in mind, column profiles will not apply when in the "Milestone only Gantt" view as milestones do not have the same properties as tasks.

Apply Filter Profiles to Gantt view (v2.253+)

Filter profiles can also be applied to the tasks in Gantt view. Useful for filtering out certain tasks, such as closed tasks, tasks assigned to particular agents, tasks not due to start for another month.

To apply pre-configured filter profiles use the options shown in Figure 15.

Fig 15. Apply Pre-configured filter profile

To apply a dynamic filter profile use the option shown in Figure 16, then you can set the filters you would like to apply.
